Talking about with Rose on the battlefield? As I recall, John just kind of stood there and got his ass handed to him immediately. It'd be an overstatement to say that he actually had time to make any effort to fight Jack.

Keep in mind that as this IS a failed timeline too, paradox space will skew everything such that everybody gets wiped. God or not. I also suspect this is why Rose didn't manage to "see" that fork coming.

Is that true? Back when failed timelines were a new and exciting concept, I was under the impression that Rose and Dave would've just kept on living after the deaths of Jade and John.

Yeah, from what I know, doomed timelines just fade out into the ether at some unspecifiable point; they don't actively try to kill everybody. (That and John and his unique brand of time travel have made me suspicious of the "doomed timeline" theory since the start.)

Also: John got stabbed before he could make any kind of actual reaction, Rose's fatal wounds came about from her actively trying to avenge the deaths of her friends and loved ones. Simple.

I really love the interactions in Paradox Space, btw. Itchy as a complete asshole and Clover being an eager to please (in both senses) little bugger is pretty great.
