I'm pretty sure in their original interpretation they weren't black at all, they were just like the Problem Sleuth crew only they had their backs to the light source always.

Yea. Judging from this page [ http://www.mspaintadventures.com/extras/ps000014.html ],their dark appearance came from being bathed in shadowy shadow.
