Hm...taking it one panel at a time, I think I've come up with the story.
We can see in the first few panels what appears to be an observation window into the tank. Given that the tank must be on the other side, we can assume that there was some sort of crazy happenstance that caused a rather large hole. Equius took charge and plugged it with himself to keep his friend/handlers from drowning.

Other notes:
- Kanaya searching for her USB and octoRose bringing it up is adorable.
- Aradia looking disappointed in Equius may mean he made the hole.
- Janitor Karkat not knowing about the mess must mean it wasn't a "big" thing when it happened.

Actually, judging by the face and fins, especially in the first couple of panels, I think Equius is supposed to be a manatee......

One thing I don't quite get about this AU is....are the troll sea things magic? (Also how do you decide what trolls are magic sea creatures which ones are human)

If I remember correctly both Meenah and Feferi have the power to turn others into sea beasts. Like I'm sure there are trolls that are set in stone as human in this AU and vise versa, but I don't really know how it's decided.
