The answer is to honestly not blame either party in either of these relationships. Relationships are complicated.

They were young teens who were new to the whole relationship thing. Relationships are hard, especially for two people who have been isolated for mot of their lives.

What about Jake's canon feelings, that he felt it was "inevitable" and he should just go with it, communicate that Dirk gave him any agency in the relationship? What about Dirk's attempts to re-mold Jake into a "ruthless killing machine" communicates that Dirk has any respect for Jake's personhood? Dirk is basically the Homestuck stand-in for Edward Cullen, but people make excuses for him and their relationship anyway. (Largely because it's same-sex, I would guess; this fandom has a similar problem about acknowledging the fact that what Mindfang did to her slave was rape.)

I actually get the feeling Dirk/Jake is bullied a lot more because of its samesex status.
Do we have to have this brought up on every single Dirk/Jake picture ever bumped, or every image where Jake references Dirk though? The same certainly doesn't happen to questionable het relationships such as Meulin/Kurloz or Aradia/Equius or even the biggest one of all - Tavros/Vriska.
