Not familiar with Off: is that some kind of grimdark Winnie the Pooh?

>Innocent as Christopher Robin

Obviously you've never played Winnie The Pooh's Home Run Derby.

If you are refering to the bear, that character is from Dangan Ronpa, not Off. The Off rep is the mask.

Off is a surreal, French-originated, fanmade console-style RPG that was made in the late-2000's by a person named Mortis-Ghost who used RPGmaker. It was roughly translated in English last year, but recently received an updated, cleaned up translation months ago. I have no idea why this game of all games blew up within the Homestuck fanbase and not some other freeware indie game. I'm not sure if the fanbase will last seeing that the game itself is short(you can complete it in less than 15-20-hours) and there have since then no plans at a sequel. Still, if you are curious you can download it here:

Though, why this game and not Earthbound or any of the other Mother games, seeing that those games are way more related to Homestuck than Off?

This comic is in reference to the somewhat popular opinion that the upswell of the Off fandom and DR fandoms by Homestuck fans were just essentially only due to filling time while Homestuck was on hiatus, and that they'd be forgotten and vacated once HS struck back up because being in more than one fandom is not a thing some people can do I suppose.

I understand DR having a big fandom, but Off? As I said it is a freeware one-shot RPG with no sequels(either made by the original creator or fan-wise) or albums of expansive remix music. It's still kind of befuddling how this got a big fanbase and from many of the Homestuck fandom. I thought the kids these days would be turned-off by the random battles of some RPGs.

And before you point out but Pokemon has random battles, one you usually encounter them in tall grass and two everywhere else like a cave or building, you can use a item to advoid them which isn't present in Off.

It's not too big of a stretch to accept that fans of Homestuck would appreciate a good cerebral complex thought-provoking multilayered story though, which is definitely Off's big draw.

Off definitely would not have been as popular as it was though without the Autoplay feature though, not even the biggest Off fans tend to rave about the battle system.

It's interesting to analyze how and why Off's fandom came to be, you're right it's obscure. It seems to be one of those just kind of... weird things that happens. As someone who has gotten into a lot of fandoms due to Tumblr exclusively pretty much (including Homestuck), I do often wonder who and how these things blow up on there. But it happens. Certain characters or games or just things in general get really popular in wildly different regions from their point of origin. Not a perfect example, but Japan's weird fascination with Ronald McDonald comes to mind. People can just be curious.
