Beats me, but the Russian comment at the source indicates that this is based on a 4chan meme involving Touhou.

One Explanation: In Japan/Manga, they depict/perceive the sound of a lion's roar as "がお~", and since Nep's lastname sounds like "lion" and that her character motif is lion/feline based...you see where i'm going right?

As for the Touhou thing, it's probably either design-wise or based off a character with similar motifs (idk, i'm not well versed in the Touhou universe)

But only a lion can say "gaaa"? Tigers, leopards, etc. have their own onomatopoeias? Because a picture of Nepeta saying "Roar!" in English wouldn't be much of a pun. In fact, even if she were doing it while dressed up as a lion*, that still wouldn't be much of a pun. It would be, like, oh, huh, a literal representation of traits which are almost literally embodied in Nepeta's character already.

Sorry, it's not in any mean spirit that I'm criticizing your explanation, I just take the Matter of Punstuck pretty seriously.

* Animal costumes in Japan are called "hikikomori", as I learned the other day.

^oh it's okay, learn a little everyday amirite? okay, so maybe other "big cat" animals are also given "gao~" (i'm sure tigers in manga do so too given that it is a common animal that pops up in Japanese culture, and granted i've never seen much animals in manga to declare it solidly) but at least to my knowledge the pun might be based around her character motif/name.

I take the matter of Japanese culture usage a bit too seriously sometimes*

*those overall(footy-pajama like)hoody animal costumes are actually called Kigurumi(not to be confused with the anime character mask-wearing fetish, but as much a subset of the mascot trend), not Hikikomori(shut-ins, NEETs, people who constantly stay confined in their homes/rooms who rarely, RARELY go outside, or think severe introverts)

Yeah, sorry, the "hikikomori" comment was a feebly joking callback to post #118300.
