I don't really see Kanaya as Rei at all though. Kanaya is a person who is socially awkward and often irritated with people. Though she plays a somewhat maternal role it isn't to Tavros.

Someone like Aradia, who is emotionally stunted in her dead form feels a more natural Rei.

Yes but I mentioned that the maternal role she plays isn't to Tavros. If Karkat played Shinji I would say it was an okay fit but that isn't the case.

Her personality outside of that doesn't fit at all and the role doesn't in regards to Tavros and Vriska doesn't fit. Kanaya is someone who values her relationship with Asuka/Vriska more highly than her relationship with Tavros/Shinji which doesn't make sense in NGE context.

Let us also harp on how Equius wouldn't be buds with Karkat like the picture shows. (or how the positions might be better reversed)
Or maybe how Gamzee shouldn't be Kaworu because he's not a stoner.

Cold hard truth is that this isn't taking canon into too much consideration. Most AU's don't.
Aradia's "dead form" wouldn't make much sense seeing as she's been more alive and perky than dead and not.
Kanaya being reserved and mothering is just enough to link her to Rei.

And that's all this is. Plugging in characters based on a small connection they might have.

Gamzee's connection at least makes sense based on the character. What should be taken into account is character relationships.

Aradia at least makes more sense because the connection between her to Tavros and Vriska is more relatable for a position as Rei than for Kanaya's position.

Aradia's dead form does make much more sense because that is the example we have closest to Rei's personality in Homestuck and it is also a character with the proper connection to the other two main pilots.

I didn't point out Kensuke or Touji because facing facts they aren't as important as Rei is and Anno stopped caring about them long ago.
