The old dude is Leonhard Euler, 19th century Swedish physicist and one of the most important mathmeticians ever. He died of a brain hemorrhage while visiting with one of his collegues and discussing the then recent discovery of Uranus and the observed peculiarities of its orbit. Calliope would have loved him.
