JOHN: hello, everyone. we are gathered here today to mourn the death of a very dear person.
JOHN: young teenage john. let's all bow our heads *bows*

While I do agree that John tends to get shortchanged in regard to the amount of sadstuck for him, I think that part of the cause might be that he is the the very first POV character of the comic. Readers spent a lot of time with him doing a lot of very goofy things before anything started to get serious, so I think that cemented many people's image of John as a fundamentally goofy guy. Which, to be fair, he is, even though that isn't everything there is to him.

I think that since John was the first Homestuck character we met, he became the most closely aligned with the audience in some ways. Perhaps people are less willing to see him lose his generally upbeat attitude (and yes, I know this doesn't apply to everyone) because that's something that's always served as a touchstone in the comic. Though I could be wrong.

I will point out (because I have feelings on the matter) that when John finally got his chance to have an emotional meltdown (far after the other three did by the way) he got lambasted as a jerk by a substantial portion of the fandom (not everyone of course in case you need me to clarify that nothing is absolute in fandom when it comes to reactions and opinions) while the other three got to be upset and depressed and freak out without judgement and that always bugged the shit out of me because he was essentially condemned for dealing with pretty much the exact same trauma (loss of family, weight of the game, growing up and all the shit that comes with it) the other three dealt with just in another way (he was also condemned for NOT freaking out soon enough wow John you sure are cold and unfeeling for your Dad what a jerk for misunderstanding him no one else in this comic ever did that with their parental figure).

Your point is interesting and admittedly not one I thought about before except for the fact that a lot of people in the fandom have no trouble branding John an asshole jerk so there is obviously a lot of people who have no trouble distancing John from his "lovable scamp goofball" persona. The real weird thing is John does not get any attention given to why he does rude things, why he misunderstands, why he gets mad. He does all those things, he can be an asshole. But what he apparently can't be to a chunk of people is sad or hurting or upset or angsty or dumb /without being a horrible person/.

Maybe Hussie's writing didn't serve him well enough, maybe he is just supposed to be the generic personalityless rpg hero with one note to his entire existence but hm. That was never how I experienced him and it is kinda disheartening at times when people don't allow a character you love their full range of feelings and experiences.

Buuuuut that's just my thoughts I guess. I almost have forgotten how annoyed I was at the fandom during those updates. Almost.
