I actually quite like the idea of not-joke Fat Vriska. It's not my headcanon but it's cute and would give some weight behind a lot of her insecurities (no pun intended)

I like to think Aranea is plump and cute like this. It would seem to complement her shyness and book-enthusiasm.

Ah yes, because fat women can only be insecure, vulnerable, shy and cutesy. They can't be competent or strong-willed or cutthroat.

This fandom.

We're talking about Vriska here dude, Vriska who obviously has issues beneath her competent strong-willed surface. One headcanon looking deeper into one character is obviously not indicative of all people fitting one aspect of said character. That'd be painting with a hilariously broad brush.

(You know, like you kind of just did right there with your damning the whole fandom in one fell swoop)

pat pats

It'll be alright, I think this was all just a misunderstanding man.

Haha, most depictions of Fat Vriska have her threatening to eat and/or crush someone with her titanic body. (Which is funny and maybe in-character, but not something people ever actually do.) This illustration is remarkable for having Fat Vriska behave like a real kid, which I think prompted the initial comment.

Most of the depictions of fat Vriska in this fandom are mean-spirited, fatphobic jokes, based on Andrew Hussie's mean-spirited, fatphobic remarks about fat Vriska being his underage girlfriend. When Vriska is being depicted seriously, she's never depicted as fat. In this depiction, where she is, she's being portrayed as cutesy, with her serious and vicious side downplayed.

You see that in other depictions of fat characters in fandom too. Characters like Nepeta or Feferi, who are vicious hunters in their own right, get flanderized into two-dimensional cutesy moeblobs, which goes hand-in-hand with the popular fandom depictions of those characters as chubby. Vanilla Jane is commonly drawn to be fat--Crockdark Jane, who's actually dangerous, never is. You'll never see art of chubby John or (the vanishingly rare interpretation of) chubby Dave wielding their hammer or swords against their enemies, just snuggling on others in saccharine ship art.

This fandom refuses to depict fat characters being competent, self-assertive, or dangerous. Don't try to pretend that the infantilizing and cutesification of fat people isn't a fandom-wide phenomenon.

Maybe i'm just weird, but i think normal feferi/vriska/nepeta are cute, violence and all. then again i grew up in an area where girls were expected to eb just as tough/fighty as guys, and most of them hunt rather regularly, so i guess growing up i got a weird idea of what a cute girl is like.

^ Anon raises good points. Thinking it over I just realized that none of the Homestuck characters are specifically characterized as fat or even plump...

In fact, only 3 characters in all of MSPA are fat: Ace Dick, Madame Murel, and Mobster Kingpin. And they are all hardasses who use their portliness for intensely combative purposes.

Maybe we collectively do prefer teddy bears to bowling balls.

(On one hand what's not to like about teddy bears; on the other an unacknowledged bias lends support to bizarro attitudes)

There are fat Felt too; Sawbuck in particular. He's more adorable than badass, I'm afraid.
