I have to admit I'm a little at a loss as to the artistic advantage of including an emoticon that parallels the exact facial expression the character is already making.

Well, the joke there is that it's impossible to contort your mouth into a ? shape in the first place, so that it was a dubious emoticon for her to use in text, and then a ridiculous sight gag when her talksprite made the corresponding face.

In cases like these (and there are others, such as regular ol' smiley faces), there's no joke, and it's nothing but redundant and a little dumb. Oh well, just a pet peeve of mine.

Yep! And the symptom of it irking me is: me saying "This is a little dumb." Just some ordinary opinion-havin' procedure, over here. No statements of universal objective truth.

Guys this isn't even a Homestuck thing, it happens in art a lot. Maybe the artist just didn't like the white space in the corner, that's not stupid that's something that irked them being fixed by something that happens to irk you. No need to take it further than that.
