Not sure if serious, but we know firsthand that trolls' skeletons are structurally similar to humans' at a rough level, including spines. We've seen them getting vaporized, after all.

eh, i still liked the moderately insectiod angle, as far as how else do you explain them being born via a symbiotic species, or explain some of the durability/strength the highbloods got.

species to violent to be guaranteed survival? have the bugs make your babies, boom previous mammals, now mammal-bug hybrids with increased stats all around.
