I'm completely convinced that all of Dirk's machinations will end up collapsing around him. One, because otherwise he really would seem like a Marty Stu, and I'm sure Hussie is better than that. Two, it really seemed as if Bro had a ton of complex plans and we all know how that turned out.

Dirk has a shit ton of obvious insecurities and flaws I really have to wonder if you all are even looking at him fully. Iunno why he's not allowed to do stuff without accusations of Marty Studom. It's giving me flashbacks to early Jade reactions.

^I believe it mostly has to do with a)he's the most competent of all of eight kids so far(he even raised himself), b)his batshit insane plans has worked towards his favor so far, c)his character sounds the closest to Hussie's voice and humor which brings us to the accusations of him being blatant Hussie self-insert(other than the obvious ones).

That said, with the revelation of him being clingy as hell, a possible break-up, and him being gifted(cursed) with Yalbaldoth, maybe a train-wreck will happen to this character and the complaints about him being a Gary Stu will die down a bit.

Hussie has said actually Dave is the most similar to himself and no one's ever called him self-insert.

Jade initially reeked of Mary Suedom (keyword being initially) and no one called for her systematic emotional dismantling. No one screamed for a train-wreck for the brilliant rich orphan girl who is musically talented and lives in a huge house to be raised by her dog.

No instead the fandom gives her a non-canon snooty superiority complex particularly in interactions with the only family she has because yeah it makes a ton of sense for her to hate her only brother.

Am I missing something here? I must be.

If you don't like the character, fine. But be honest about it.

I don't hate Dirk I'm just saying what I think will happen narratively.

I don't mind speculating, it's the people rooting for it that depresses me.

^^^The different reactions might be due to Jade having little effect on the action early on. If I'm recalling things accurately, she functioned mainly as a prophecy dispenser until her entrance, which involved an uberpowerful devilbeast being prototyped, which the fandom was already aware was quite a bad thing. Her technical and musical talents weren't ever relevant to the plot. Dirk, on the other hand, waded into the clusterfuck that was the Nobles' entrance, kissing corpses left and right, and came out looking stone cold awesome while his teammates were floundering and being reluctant to smooch dead things. Plus he got with the guy he, Roxy, and Jane all had a crush on.

In short, Jade's odor of Mary Suedom came from her traits, which functioned mainly as flavor, while Dirk's comes from his actions and effects on the plot. I don't think Dirk's a Stu any more than Jade is, but I can see where people are coming from.

So he's being punished for moving the plot. Yeah ok, glad that makes sense to one of us.

^ what rikalous said. My main problem with Dirk is that he's depicted as the uber-competent savior of all asses while everyone else is running around either messing things up or not knowing what to do. To me, Dirk just isn't a very relatable or interesting character. The few flaws he has are far outweighed by all the "WOW LOOK HOW AWESOME THIS GUY IS" moments.
