Karkat is no more bad guy in this situation than Dave I belive.
Rose's alcoholism and Terezi's soda-whatever are mirroring each other. Guys, they are even both not understood buy other-species-pal. Maybe I'm guessing too much but it looks exactly like the whole "troll weirdness/human weirdness" thing.

Homestuck in general is about everyone not understanding each other. The Alpha kids debacle has shown that it's not even just kids not understanding trolls and trolls not understanding kids.

They're young people, they don't know what they're talking about about anything.
