Why do so many people picture Jake and Jane as black? I'm not trying to be racist, but in the comic they're obviously white.

They aren't obviously white in the comic. The only time they are white is when they go Trickster, and that changes the color of the characters' skin (you can see it happen when Trickster Roxy kisses Dirk). When the characters' skin color is completely white as paper, as opposed to a peachy color, you can imagine them as any skin color you want. The only character that has ever been confirmed to be white is Dirk, when John calls Dave's Bro a white rapper.

What is cool is that Homestuck uses icons for its characters rather than detailing them out so they look like very specific people. Jade doesn't have a skin tone or a specific type of chin or a height or weight or anything. All you need for someone to look like Jane is the hair, the glasses, the teeth, and the outfit. Everything else is a base template. And the less detailed a character is in the official art, the more different people who look nothing like each other can relate to the character, because they believe Jane looks like them individually. And so you get fanart with vast differences in its interpretations of how the characters look. And I love it because it makes everything more interesting.

Well, actually, I have my rereading session of Hussie's formspring archieve, and he stated:
"i consider the kids a-racial.

the only race they obviously definitely arent is black.

which is very racist of me."

I'm not sure why. Maybe it's true for at least three of four Strilondes (white Dirk, and therefore not clearly black Dave and Rose), but... meh. He said so. Maybe that was a joke?

The other point that anon actually has is that kids are essentially white - but not in the terms of race.

I'm pretty sure Hussie was joking with the 'not black' thing.
