A kid with nothing but ambitions and desires to go further? He's pretty fucking Slytherin.

but his ambitions are by no means as primary as he makes them out to be. karkat is entirely all bark no bite, and the only way he'd make it out of being sorted into hufflepuff is by shouting at the hat until it gave him his way

and even then, he wouldn't be slytherin

Anon #4, a lot of Slytherins are all bark and no bite. See Malfoy's lackeys, Crabbe and Goyle. Ambition is the major mark of a Slytherin student and Karkat is defined as a person by his desires. He wants to be leader, he wants to be respected, he wants to be accepted, he wants to work for the Condesce, etc.

but most of those ambitions are part of his bark, they are his front. most of those were just different masks over his desire for acceptance, to be in a position that would make him legitimate by alternia's standards, where he was born a pariah. but even that i wouldn't translate to ambition, because it's mostly empty bluster.

if you take everything karkat says at face value, then maybe karkat would fit slytherin best. but you would also be looking at a character that isn't really karkat vantas.

Slytherin also had several people though who were mostly bark, again bringing up Malfoy's goons. Karkat wants to be accepted, accepted by a highly casted and restictive society of "pure bloods" and "lesser". Hes ashamed of his "lower" status, and wants to be a leader to compensate.

I woudlnt put him in slytherin as an "evil" character, but he would definetly be in their because his goals would most closely mesh with people seeking power/influence, or with those who follow or are accepted by them.

Thats not to say he wouldnt be a close second in gryffindor, since he is about unity/brotherhood, and protecting others, honestly wed probably end up with a Potter-situation where its whichever he himself deemed desirable that he would get put into.

But of course, lets face it, hes that guy every house would facepalm at, and every teacher would pretend wasnt there, as he sat in the back of the classroom arguing with himself and whos a bigger dumbass for bumping into himself with a time-turner.

I agree that no matter which house Karkat is sorted into, he will always be that weird guy because that is just who Karkat is. But if I were sorting him, I'd probably put him in Hufflepuff. Yes, he has courage and yes, he has big goals for himself (Threshecutioner! Bloodthirsty leader! A god!) BUT he is the only leader of a team in Homestuck who is always worried about his teammates and checking in with them. He will always try to listen to his friends and give advice, he will comfort them when they are upset, and he'll try to motivate his team. To Karkat, being a leader is completely tied to being loyal to his friends. He also is constantly putting too much on himself. He sacrificed his sleep and health during SGrub so that everything could get accomplished and so that he could help the other trolls. He always feels responsible for basically everything, and the one time he didn't accomplish a task (the frog breeding) was a big moment of shame and regret for him. I'd say that Karkat's sense of loyalty and his tendency for hard work and toil are very strong qualities in his character. But what's great about Karkat is that he's so complex that he could be sorted into multiple houses. So I think it depends on what stands out to people the most about his character: his courage, loyalty, or ambition. Pretty sure he's not a Ravenclaw though.

This could apply to many of the major characters in Homestuck which is why house sorting arguments seems to be a common thing in this fandom. Though, I think the nearly universal placements out of all the HS characters reguardless on how complex they are is Jake in Gryffindor and and Dirk in Slytherin.
