The gems are where the powers in that world come from. Vriska's gem is her eye, Kanaya has it on her belly, Terezi has it on her tongue (that one made me snort), and Fef has it on her chest.

No probs. It was the art style, mostly facial shape and wacky proportions, oddly specific to it.
