I don't think John quite understands sad. I feel like his reaction to all these deaths is to get increasingly more pissed.

TT: Anyway, your grandma managed to run away when she was quite young. Maybe it was a traumatic event like dog murder that prompted her to flee, who knows.
TT: Whatever the case, her bro stayed behind. The guy must have been seriously immune to witnessing fucked up shit, because he went on to be a famous comedian. A real kindly old cornball. A nicer guy you couldn't hope to meet, they say.

GT: actually, one of my other selves did...once. he died. and davesprite was born. so no, not necessarily. *sigh* i miss davesprite.

John just kind of responds to trauma by getting angry.

When his dad died, he didn't really get sad. But that loss came back years later and resurfaced as anger towards Davesprite, Jack and eventually Caliborn.

Not to mention, that as far as facial expressions go, he made the same one for Dream Jade's, Dad's and Rose's death. Just kind of a stare.

It's pretty odd, considering John is such a normally open and emotional guy, he just doesn't respond to sad events in a typical matter.

He's a weird kid.

I think John has seen enough of his friends die and heard of their deaths (among being killed himself multiple times) that people being saddened by the deaths of others just doesn't make sense in his eyes anymore. (Especially since trolls have shown multiple times to treat death as something absolutely normal...also the fact that Terezi was to blame for one version of him being killed)
