Why? Well, I think that is because the one of the common explanation of the Light aspect is 'attention', and 'knowledge'. He steals the attention and knowledge of the tourists who come to the Shack. Their 'Light' is stolen when they are shown lies, or 'Void'; (aka the 'mysteries' he just made himself) leaving them confused (which he profits from). He also likes to talk on and on about it, like I'm doing right now, which is a Light thing to do. Why he isn't a Thief of Light (like Vriska) is because deep down I don't think he's as selfish as Vriska is (or, appears to be). Everything he does has a reason, and usually its because of his family. A common symbol of Light are eyes (hiding one is part of his conman appearance), because it's the sense we get the most information. Okay, I'm getting into BKEW territory now, so I'll stop rambling.
