At least if you're a primate it serves a purpose in normal offspring development. For a species that naturally reproduces solely through a hive structure with a biological queen, it's either a disease, vestigial, or a curse.

Periods in general are cruel. Their biological function doesn't make them any less cruel it just makes you hate biology for being a big dick.
