@Pie: He posted a joke in the comic that parts of the fandom reacted strongly to, causing other parts of the fandom to react just as strongly to the initial reaction. That hardly constitutes starting it in a caliginous sense.
I do think vacillation is a good way to describe the relationship, too, though.
