this movie is the only place I've heard the term "fuckass" outside of Homestuck.

I immediately recognized that this movie was an inspiration for such pivotal Homestuck concepts as Doomed Timelines, spectral Future and Past Trails, countdowns to cataclysms and hilariously tragic deaths. But only upon re-watching after I read Homestuck it did I hear Donnie drop the word "fuckass" at the dinner table.

Since then it's been pretty clear to me: Karkat is troll Donnie Darko. And Donnie Darko (of course) is teenage time-travel Jesus. And Jesus is human The Sufferer (who is also a Vantas).

I guess my point is that I imagine Karkat and Kankri both look just like Jake Gylenhaal.

Except I don't think Karkat actually ACTS like Donnie at all. He just said one line that Donnie said. Both are very troubled and angry characters, but Donnie is quiet and destructive whereas Karkat tries to make the most out of the cards he's been dealt. And one is a loner and the other is a leader. But it's pretty obvious that Homestuck used a lot of ideas from Donnie Darko and expanded upon them, especially elaborating on and experimenting with the film's ideas of time travel.

I guess you're right, they are different characters... yet I still see a lot of thematic similarities between them. For example, I think Donnie would be a Blood hero. Like Karkat, this has little to do with his "powers" and more with the attitudes he adopts and the way he is "shackled to" rather than "inspired by" destiny. For Donnie, the universe demands that he destroy the offshoot timeline and kill himself in the real one. He resists at first. Then he freaks out, shrugs, and semi-gracefully accepts. Besides, as the sacrificial child (teenage time-travel Jesus) the universe is proverbially out for Donnie's blood. Karkat thinks that predestination is forcing him to jump through hoops and making him do unpleasant things (like engage his loathsome self in conversation). Almost every time Karkat has a chance to think fate is dragging him along against his will, he does.

Also, they both share a characteristic myopia. If you take the paradox/splinter universe/closed timeloop thing seriously, then Donnie is literally the Most Important Person in the Universe. And he acts like it, though it's hard to tell how much of that is because he's metaphysically-aware and how much of it is because he's a horny selfish teenager. I think Karkat, more than anyone else in Homestuck (even Vriska), tends to behave, consciously or not, like he is the Most Important Character. Sometimes he's sort of right (he gave an entire universe cancer). Other times he's not (He Regards Events As Tailored To His Personal Dissatisfaction).

And while I like Donnie Darko I've come to realize that maybe... just maybe... it's a shitty movie. Maybe Donnie is a horrendous Mary Sue character. Maybe he's supposed to learn something on his way, but as far as I can tell he stays just as stupid as ever and then dies. Maybe the filmmakers thought all the weird time shit that happened to him was supposed to be a spiritually-challenging adventure... when actually it's just a complete fulfillment of every ignoble teenage desire and thus as unchallenging as possible. (The universe literally revolves around Donnie. His irrational self-pity is suddenly completely justified. He effortlessly bangs the mysterious hot girl. Everyone thinks he's awesome for no discernible reason and he never faces consequences for his destructive acts.) And since Andrew Hussie understands Mary Sue tropes and shitty movies, I am betting he recognizes this too.

So more specifically, I think doomed timelines weren't the only thing from that movie that Homestuck improved. To my imagination, Karkat is Donnie Darko, except much better.

That's very interesting. I hadn't thought of Karkat as being in reference to Donnie, but now I can see it. Although I'm not sure Donnie would be a Blood player. He always seemed more like a Rage player to me. Both he and Gamzee have a sort of berserker mode and tend to keep to the shadows before surprising everyone with incredible feats of physical strength fueled by their emotions and desire for destruction.

If Donnie were a Blood player instead though, he would be an atrocious one. Donnie may feel bound to destiny, but Blood is very much about being bound to PEOPLE, not just ideas, and Donnie shows very little loyalty to or responsibility for any of his family or friends throughout the movie. He lies to his parents and lashes out at them constantly. His decision to change the timeline saves the girl he barely knows but leaves both his little sister and mother in danger - and many other people, considering his decision keeps the pedophile who is working with a dance troupe full of little girls out of jail. If Karkat were in Donnie's situation, he would have cared a lot more about all of these things than Donnie ever seemed to (although he'd probably still be lashing out at his parents).

I'm not sure that the situation Karkat was placed in was in response to Donnie Darko. They don't seem similar enough for me to feel that Hussie would have consciously made that connection when first coming up with Karkat's character and backstory. However, the similarities are definitely intriguing, and I do agree that Karkat would make a much better Donnie than Donnie ever could, much as I love the movie.
