I think the implication is that perhaps being a brainwarped minion of Lord English's isn't really anymore enjoyable to him then it probably was to say, the Handmaid?

The Handmaid wasn't brain warped, though. And Gamzee seems to thoroughly enjoy it.

I never said the Handmaid was brainwarped, I just said the reoccurring theme of being LE's minion doesn't seem to be one of enjoyment either way. We've had absolutely zero insight into Gamzee's thoughts for a while now, in fact his recent actual speaking parts have been telling Kurloz to shut up about his friends, and talking fondly of Karkat to Rose. There seems to be quite a few hints to Gamzee having some struggles internally.

There's also Hussie's (who was just gunned down by LE) insistence on letting Caliborn take Gamzee along, and trying to immediately handwave suspicion away from Gamzee's recent kernelsprite activity by passing it off as the activities of a wacky clown and nothing more.
